FAQs

What do you do?

I design print-based publications, such as magazines, brochures and reports, as well as other marketing-related material. Please take a look at my portfolio for some examples of my work.

How much will it cost?

Please see my rates page for information on my charges. In estimating the cost to design an entire magazine from start to finish, I generally work on the basis that it takes about a day to lay out 10 editorial pages. Therefore, a 50-page publication would take, approximately, 5 days to produce. Please note: template design is required for a first edition, which adds another 2 to 3 days onto the process. In addition, any bespoke fonts and stock photography required are charged separately.

What do I get for my money?

For what I consider to be a very fair rate within design industry standards, I will provide you with a professional and cost-effective service, taking your project from its initial concept to the delivery of files to your designated printer, overseeing the design, picture sourcing and page layout. I pride myself on my ability to manage my work efficiently, and to maintain excellent communication with my clients throughout the entire production process and beyond.

What is template design?

Every magazine has its own template on which the main layouts are based, in order for the publication to have a consistent look and feel. The template design involves setting up the specific page size, the number of text columns, the fonts that will be used, as well as the standard folio elements (i.e. headers/footers and page numbers).

How do you work?

I work from home using Mac-based Adobe CS software (InDesign & Photoshop). Clients provide me with a flatplan for every issue, plus all of the content (text and images) required. Although images can be supplied, I often have to source stock photography myself (using image libraries, such as iStockphoto or Getty). Please note: stock photography is charged separately.

How do you share files with your clients?

I correspond with my clients primarily via email, and use cloud servers (such as Dropbox) for sharing files.

What are your working hours?

My working hours are Monday to Friday, 9:30am to 5:30pm. Please only call between these times.

What is a High Resolution (hi-res) image?

For print purposes, high resolution images are required. These images have a resolution of 300dpi (dots per inch), which relates to the number of printed dots that make up an image. In contrast, a computer monitor only has a resolution of 72dpi, so an image taken from the web would be inadequate for print use.

I’m also a designer – do you ever need a hand?

Yes! I’m always on the lookout for other designers like myself to help me out occasion, so feel free to get in touch. Please note: you must have InDesign experience and be able to work from home using your own computer and software.

Do you ever require freelance photographers or illustrators?

I haven’t had the need in the past, however some of my more recent projects could potentially necessitate the use of photographers or illustrators, so please feel free to get in touch.

Do you take on student projects?

No, I do not. I only carry out work for professional clients and publishers.
